Origins of Roulette

The first kind of roulette was made as early as in the 18th century in France. The roulette wheel is supposed to be an amalgamation of many English wheel games – Reiner, Ace of Hearts, Roly-Poly and E.O. along with a few Italian board games such as – Biribi, Hoca and Roulette.

In 1843, in a German town called Homburg, a French man named Francois Blanc innovated the single U format roulette wheel so they could compete with other casinos who provided the conventional wheel with single and double zero house pockets. In the 1800s, roulette became one of the most popular games in casinos throughout Europe and America. In the 1860s when the German government abolished gambling, the Blanca family moved to the last remaining casino operating legally at Monte in Europe and made it the gambling center for all elite in Europe. Here the single zero roulette wheel became very popular and spread to different parts of the world even though in America, the double zero roulette wheel continued to dominate.

As French legends have it, it is believed that Francois Blanc apparently bargained with the devil so he could find the secrets of roulette. This legend emerges from the coincidence that the total of the numbers that are placed on the roulette wheel 1 to 36 add up to 666 which is referred to as the number of the beast.

In the United States, the conventional wheel was placed on top of the table for the first time in order to stop both fraud gamblers and fraud dealers from cheating by hiding devices in the table or the wheel. The layout was simplified hence. Gradually this grew into what is known today as the American style roulette game as opposed to the conventional French roulette game. The American format became popular in the goon dens while the French format evolved with style in Monte Carlo. However since the American roulette format guarantees quick cash, fast action, simplified betting and the use of either a single or double zero wheels, it seems to dominate the world market today.

In the beginning of the 20th century, Monte Carlo with the conventional French roulette and Las Vegas with the later designed American roulette seemed to be the only two towns where the game was radically played. Later around 1970, the game spread across the world and today it isn’t limited to a single place or two. You can play it almost anywhere.
